SUMMARY:April Meeting live at the Notebaert Nature Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Evolution of the Toxin Uptake System in Poison Frogs \nJeffrey Coleman \nI have had a lifelong passion for the outdoors\, and I knew from the age of 12 that I wanted to be a scientist. I received my B.A. in Integrative Biology from the University of California\, Berkeley\, where I completed an honors thesis on New World monkey evolution and comparative morphology. This experience got me hooked on studying animals that live in tropical Central and South America\, so I spent several years post-college as a Research Scientist at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago studying conservation genetics in keel-billed toucans from Panama. As part of a side project during this time\, I also investigated how natural selection has affected the evolutionary history of immune genes (called toll-like receptors) that the bird family Corvidae—which includes crows and blue jays—use to defend themselves against West Nile virus. Given that no animal seems to epitomize the Neotropics more than poison frogs\, I decided to focus on this extraordinary group of amphibians for my Ph.D. My research agenda is centered on a particular genus of poison frogs that live in Ecuador\, called Epipedobates: I have a deep curiosity about how their diets have driven increased levels of toxicity in their skin\, what genetic mechanisms have allowed them to be toxic\, and how metabolic costs of display and defense play out in their DNA. \nWatch on Zoom or on our Facebook group. \nLink to join Webinar \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/84215490313\n  \nFacebook link \nhttps://www.facebook.com/ChicagoHerpetologicalSociety

SUMMARY:May 26 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Title: Mambas\, Malaria and Militias: 21st Century Herpetology in Democratic Republic of Congo \nThe talk will explain the challenges for fieldwork in Central Africa\, including poor infrastructure\, tropical disease\, and armed militias.  Evolutionary genetics studies of toads in the Congo Basin reveal that the lowland rainforests are surprisingly rich in unrecognized species\, many of which are endemic to tiny areas sandwiched between rivers.  I also tell the story of a fortuitous observation by an undergraduate leading to the world’s first known example of a frog mimicking a venomous snake. \nEli Greenbaum is an associate professor of evolutionary genetics at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP)\, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses in Genetics\, Herpetology\, and Biodiversity. He also serves as director of the UTEP Biodiversity Collections\, which are the university’s plant and animal natural history collections. Greenbaum began working as a biodiversity scientist in Africa in 2001 with two expeditions to Mali and Guinea. As a postdoctoral research fellow at Villanova University in 2006\, he worked with professor Aaron Bauer (world authority on geckos) on expeditions to South Africa and the Seychelles. Since 2007\, he has led ten expeditions to Democratic Republic of the Congo\, where he has worked with an all-Congolese team of herpetologists to survey the amphibian and reptile biodiversity of Central Africa. Other recent Greenbaum expeditions conducted similar work in Burundi and Uganda. Greenbaum has published over one hundred articles in refereed science journals\, which have been cited over 3\,400 times. His work has been covered in NBC News\, Newsweek\, National Geographic Daily News\, Africa Geographic Magazine\, Reptiles Magazine\, Smithsonian.com\, Nature.com\, and The Huffington Post. His book Emerald Labyrinth: A Scientist’s Adventures in the Jungles of the Congo (ForeEdge\, University Press of New England) was honored as one of the Top 10 Biology Books of 2017 by Forbes Magazine.  Additional information can be found at:  http://eligreenbaum.utep.edu/

SUMMARY:January Meeting - Michael Stefani\, Captive Varanid Husbandry
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Michael Stefani will be speaking on Captive Varanid Husbandry \nMichael Stefani\, of “Mike’s Monitors!” is a 55 year old male from the Chicago land area. As a 5 year old boy his mother gifted me a 3-toed box turtle for his birthday. This is all it took to get him hooked on a lifetime passion for all things animal related. He’s kept and bred many reptiles over the years\, and in 1998 he started working with Varanids. He was one of the first people to breed V. Jobiensis in the USA and the first person to cross-breed V. Prasinus to V. Beccari. He now breeds a variety of Varanid species! Summary: Michael will be speaking this month in-depth about his experiences with breeding and keeping a variety of unique Varanid species over the past 20 years. \n============================================================ \nThe regular monthly meetings of the Chicago Herpetological Society take place at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum at the corner of Fullerton Parkway and Cannon Drive\, across from Lincoln Park Zoo.
